RoRo vs Container Shipping for Chinese Cars: Which Option Is Better?

RoRo versus container is the first commercial fork on a Chinese car export. RoRo is a garage on a ship. A container is a sealed box. Neither is always cheaper, faster, or safer. The better option is the one that matches a driveable state, a destination terminal, a damage personality, and a duty sentence you already wrote.

Keep the comparison on one vehicle card. A RoRo number built on a running sedan is not an argument against a container number built on a dead SUV. When people say RoRo is always cheaper, they are usually comparing two different files. Write the card first. Then run the vs.

This comparison is for dealers, exporters, and buyers in 2026. It covers process, cost groups, transit bands, documents, DDP versus port delivery, what to do with loose parts, packaging, and customs. Xinhan Logistics will price both methods on the same vehicle card when both are possible. We will not force RoRo onto a port that has no RoRo call.

If the car cannot start and steer, stop talking about RoRo as the default. If the destination is a container-only port inland from the buyer, stop talking about RoRo as the obvious save.

1. How RoRo works from a China yard to a foreign compound

The car is received, checked, and parked for a named vessel. It is driven or towed onto the ramp, lashed, and carried. At destination it is discharged to a vehicle compound. The buyer or the DDP trucker collects it there. Identity is the VIN on the booking and on the B/L. The unit is not sealed in a box. That is the product.

2. How container shipping works for one or two cars

The car is stuffed, chocked, lashed, photographed, and sealed. A 20GP is often one compact. A 40HQ can be one large or two small if the tape measure agrees. At destination the box goes to CY or to a destuff point. The car comes out. The seal story is the security story. The labour story is the cost story.

3. Driveable state decides the fork before price

RoRo operators want a unit that can be moved as a vehicle. Brakes, steering, and an allowed fuel or battery state matter. A non-runner is a container or a specialised towed RoRo exception, not a standard slot. Be honest. A failed ramp attempt is delay and a possible damage event.

4. Destination geography decides the fork after driveable state

No RoRo call means no RoRo, no matter how pretty the ocean rate looks on a different port. A RoRo port that is 800 kilometres from the dealer can lose to a container discharged nearer the door. Draw the last mile before you fall in love with a method.

5. Comparison table for a still 2026 file

Question RoRo Container (FCL)
Best unit Running cars to RoRo ports Non-runners, sealed units, no-RoRo ports
Typical ocean personality Slot + compound Box + stuffing + destuff
Damage personality Public garage, weather, neighbours Stuffing, lashing, destuff
Parts in the same move Limited cabin / boot rules Easier to load documented spares
DDP last mile Car carrier from compound CY pickup or destuff then carrier

6. Cost: compare groups, not slogans

RoRo can look cheaper on ocean and more expensive on a long inland. Container can look heavier on stuffing and cheaper when two cars share a 40HQ. DDP sits on top of either method. Ask Xinhan Logistics for both stacks on the same VIN card. A single number without method is not a comparison.

7. How long each method takes

Ocean steam can be similar on the same pair when both methods have direct calls. RoRo receiving and compound dwell differ from CY destuff dwell. Used-car exams after either method are the same customs clock. Method choice changes origin days and destination handling days more often than it changes mid-ocean days.

8. What documents both methods still share

Invoice, VIN list, export filing, B/L with VIN, used-title story if used, battery papers if EV. RoRo does not reduce paper. Container does not increase paper except for seal numbers and stuffing photos. People who pick a method to “avoid customs” are picking a fantasy.

9. DDP vs port delivery on each method

Port delivery on RoRo is a compound release. Port delivery on container is a CY or destuff release. DDP on either method is a licensed vehicle truck plus a duty payment. The method does not decide DDP. The commercial sentence does. Write the sentence first.

10. LCL is not a third way to ship the car

LCL is for parts. Do not try to “LCL a car.” If you must move accessories, either put them in the container with the car or send a later LCL. RoRo cabins are not a warehouse for extra commercial engines.

11. Packaging and lashing differences

RoRo: fluids, tyre pressure, handbrake, a little fuel if allowed, no leaks. Container: chocks, lashing to points that do not crush the body, paint protection, a seal. EV: follow the operator’s battery state. Photograph both. The photo set is how you know which personality damaged the unit.

12. Customs exams and seals

A sealed container can be a cleaner identity story. A RoRo compound can be a faster visual exam. Neither avoids duty. If destination customs want to see the VIN, they will see the VIN. Method is not a hiding place.

13. High-value and sensitive units

Low-volume, high-value, or partially disassembled cars usually belong in a box. Ordinary running stock to a RoRo market usually belongs on RoRo. Sensitive paint and aftermarket body kits lean container. Tell the forwarder what would make you angry if it were scratched. That answer is a method hint.

14. How to choose in one page

If driveable and RoRo ports exist at both ends and the buyer is near the compound, pick RoRo unless you need a seal or you are pairing two units in one box. If any of those fail, pick container. Then decide DDP or collect. Then ask for the quote. That order prevents decorative comparisons.

15. Two cars: RoRo slots versus one 40HQ

Two running cars to a RoRo port are two slots. Two compact cars to a container port can be one box. Do the arithmetic on groups, not on pride. Pairing only works if both units share cutoff and destination. A forced pair is how one buyer waits on the other.

16. Insurance language should name the method

A policy that thinks in cartons may word RoRo poorly. Ask. Name the VIN. Name RoRo or FCL. Claims need the photo set that matches the method. Xinhan Logistics can point you at the wording; you still decide the sum insured.

17. Common mistakes in this comparison

  • Booking RoRo because a friend shipped to a different country that way.
  • Stuffing a running car poorly and blaming the ocean.
  • Ignoring that the destination has no RoRo.
  • Comparing RoRo ocean with container DDP.
  • Putting loose commercial cargo in a RoRo cabin.

18. Peak space: which method books out first

RoRo garage space can vanish on a popular sailing. 40HQ equipment can vanish inland. The method you wanted may not exist that week. Have a second method in mind, or a later cutoff. Do not discover the fork on the last afternoon.

19. What to send to get both prices

VIN card, measurements, running or not, origin city, destination city, and whether the door must be DDP. Photos. Xinhan Logistics will say if RoRo is even possible, then price the possible methods. That is a comparison. Two random internet numbers are not.

20. Used cars and weather

Used paint and RoRo weather are a known pair. If the car is already fragile, a box can be the better commercial choice even when RoRo is available. New running stock on a short RoRo sea can accept the garage. Be specific about the unit you have, not the unit in the brochure.

21. EV files on both methods

Ask the operator. Some RoRo lines publish EV terms. Some container files need extra marks. The better option is the one that will actually load the battery you have. A cheaper RoRo that refuses the EV at the gate is not cheaper.

22. Last-mile equipment after each method

RoRo compounds expect car carriers. Container destuff points may need a different truck if the car cannot start after a long idle. Write the plan. A dead battery after a box voyage is a known event. Pack a jump plan or accept a wrecker line.

23. Keep the VIN sentence identical on both templates

Whether you pick RoRo or a box, the VIN on every page stays the same. Method changes handling. It does not change identity. Identity errors are slower than the wrong method.

24. Close: pick the method that can finish, then price it

RoRo versus container is not a brand preference. It is a finishable file. Choose the method that can roll or destuff at the real destination, then ask Xinhan Logistics for the groups. The better option is the one that arrives legal, intact, and paid as you intended.

25. Damage surveys: who walks the unit on each method

RoRo compounds often have a receiving clerk who marks a damage sheet. Container destuff may have nobody unless you book a survey. If the car is high value, book the survey on the method you chose. A professional comparison includes that labour line.

Photograph at origin so the destination sheet has a baseline. Method choice without a survey plan is how both sides blame the ocean.

26. Fuel, battery state, and why RoRo gates reject units

Too much fuel, a leak, or an EV battery outside the published state will bounce a RoRo receiving. The container alternative then appears in a panic, with a new cutoff. Decide the state before you pick the method. A bounced RoRo is not proof that containers are always better. It is proof the card was wrong.

Ask Xinhan Logistics for the operator’s published state. Do not guess from a petrol-car habit.

27. When a 20GP loses to RoRo even if the box looks tidy

One compact in a 20GP pays for a whole box and a stuffing gang. The same running compact on RoRo to a nearby compound often lands cheaper and with fewer labour marks. People choose the 20GP because they fear weather. Fear is allowed, but price it. Do not call the box cheaper without the groups.

If the destination has no RoRo, the 20GP is not a loss. It is the only finishable method. The vs only exists when both methods can finish.

28. Hybrid files: one car RoRo, parts in a box

Dealers sometimes RoRo the runner and FCL or LCL the spare bumper set. That can be the right split. It can also be two clocks that refuse to meet. If the dealer cannot retail the car without the parts, stuff the parts with a container car, or send parts earlier. A clever split that misses the showroom date is not clever.
