How to Ship from China to Amazon FBA: Costs, Transit Times and Labeling

Shipping from China to Amazon FBA fails more often on labels and carton data than on the ocean. Sellers still ask only for a freight rate, then discover the fulfillment center wants FNSKU, carton labels, and box content that nobody printed in Shenzhen. This 2026 article explains costs as factor groups, transit as stacks, and labeling as an origin operation.

It also covers process, documents, DDP versus port delivery, LCL versus FCL, packaging, customs, and common mistakes. Ranges are planning bands. Xinhan Logistics quotes measured cartons and a named FC. We will not invent a precise live FBA freight rate and call it today’s tariff.

If you remember one sentence: create the inbound shipment, then pack and label to that shipment, then book freight.

1. The only order of operations that works

Amazon inbound first, physical pack second, freight booking third. Reverse that order and you relabel in California or you miss a cutoff in Yantian.

Share the shipment ID with the forwarder the day it exists. It belongs on carton labels and on the delivery paperwork, not in a forgotten spreadsheet.

2. Labeling at origin: units, cartons, and pallets

Unit FNSKU covers the factory barcode. Carton labels match shipment ID and carton sequence. Pallet labels are required when the inbound method uses pallets. Each layer is a different sticker. Mixing them up is a receiving error.

Print in a dry room. Apply to a flat carton face. Do not tape across the barcode.

  • FNSKU on each sellable unit.
  • Amazon carton labels on each master carton.
  • Pallet labels if Amazon assigned a palletized method.
  • Old barcodes covered so scanners cannot pick the factory EAN.

3. Cost factors behind an FBA China-to-FC move

Label labor and materials, origin warehouse, pickup, export, main freight, destination customs, last mile, appointment waiting, palletization, and storage. Air chargeable weight often dominates small urgent shipments. Sea CBM dominates replenishment.

Hidden cost is usually relabel and storage, not the line item named ocean freight.

4. Planning table: cost drivers versus what you can control

Control the left column. Quote the right column as a range, not a fake live number.

Driver What changes it Seller control
Chargeable weight / CBM Pack density, air vs sea Carton design within Amazon limits
Origin prep Who labels, how many SKUs Factory training or China warehouse
Main carriage Mode, season, origin port Book when cargo is actually ready
Destination customs HTS, value, PGA Honest invoice, complete specs
FC last mile Region, pallets, appointment Correct FC code, on-time docs

5. Transit times if you count labeling days

A factory that needs three days to apply FNSKUs is not ready tomorrow. Add those days in front of export. US West FCL factory-to-FC often plans in the low-to-mid three weeks when papers are clean; East Coast and EU add more water time. LCL adds CFS dwell.

Air factory-to-FC often plans around 7–14 days including export and trucking. Express can be 4–8 days for small parcels that Amazon will accept that way. None of these bands include a relabel detour.

6. Documents that sit next to the labels

Invoice and packing list must count the same units the FNSKUs represent. B/L or AWB. Export declaration. Destination entry. Battery documents if applicable. Labels without an invoice still cannot leave China as commercial cargo.

Box content information is an Amazon file. It is not a substitute for a packing list, but it must not contradict one.

7. DDP versus port when labels are already on the carton

Labeled cartons at a destination port still need a legal importer and a trucker. DDP packages that. Port delivery leaves you to find both while Amazon’s delivery window ticks.

DDP does not mean the FC becomes importer of record. Know the name on the customs entry.

8. LCL versus FCL for labeled Amazon cargo

Labeled LCL cartons take more handling. Use stronger cartons. FCL reduces touches but needs a cube that justifies the box. A forwarder should run both numbers on measured CBM.

Do not load unlabeled cartons into FCL because you plan to label in Los Angeles unless that warehouse and those days are in the plan you sold to finance.

9. Packaging under Amazon inbound limits

Carton weight and dimension limits change and differ by program. Check Amazon’s current inbound settings for that shipment type. A 30 kg carton that was fine last year may be wrong this year.

Inner packing must survive LCL crush. Amazon prep (poly bag, etc.) is additional to export packing, not instead of it.

10. Customs classification still follows the product, not the FNSKU

FNSKU is an Amazon identifier. HTS is a customs identifier. Putting FNSKU in the goods description without a real English product name slows both origin and destination.

Share materials and function. Toys with magnets, cosmetics, and electronics are not miscellaneous goods.

11. How labeling errors show up as extra cost

Wrong FC on the carton label. Duplicate carton IDs. Missing unit labels in a mixed carton. Unreadable print. Each error can mean a prep center, a delay, and a missed restock.

Scan-test a sample carton in China. The test takes minutes. The destuff surprise takes weeks.

12. Multi-SKU cartons versus single-SKU cartons

Amazon’s rules on mixed SKUs in a carton depend on the inbound type. If mixed cartons are allowed, box content must be perfect. If not, mixed cartons are a refusal waiting to happen.

Factories like mixed leftovers. Amazon does not. Tell the factory the rule in writing.

13. Expiration, lot, and transparency labels

If the listing needs expiration, print it in the format Amazon currently wants. Lot codes help recalls and also help you when receiving is short. Transparency codes, if enrolled, are another origin print job.

Do not apply expiration only on the master carton. Units get received, not poetry on the outer box.

14. Air versus sea once labeling is done

Finished labels do not change physics. Air still prices on chargeable weight. Sea still prices on containers or CBM. Choose with inventory days, not with pride.

Urgent plus heavy plus cheap is not a triangle you can close. Pick two.

15. Common mistakes on China-to-FBA labeling jobs

Printing FNSKUs for the parent ASIN instead of the variation. Using last month’s shipment ID. Stacking labels over wet tape. Letting the factory translate product names into gift set.

Also: booking the vessel on the same afternoon the label PDF arrived. Cutoff does not care.

16. How to reduce cost on the labeling-plus-freight file

Standardize carton counts per SKU. Label in China. Avoid mixed leftovers. Use sea when time allows. Keep CBM honest so LCL versus FCL is chosen once.

Do not save money by skipping box content. Ineligible freight is expensive storage.

17. Worked thinking example without fake rates

2.4 CBM of labeled kitchen gadgets, Foshan to a Texas FC, not urgent. LCL DDP is the default conversation. If the same cargo is unlabeled and the listing is empty, you may still air after a China warehouse prep day—time can beat sea plus a stockout.

Quote both only when the cargo card is complete. Otherwise you are comparing theatre.

18. Peak season labeling capacity in China

Prep warehouses fill. Factories overtime on production and forget stickers. Book prep capacity with the ready date, not after the cartons are already on a truck to the port.

Amazon inbound windows also tighten. A late label file pushes both clocks.

19. How Xinhan Logistics handles costs, time, and labels together

We will not quote ocean in isolation from prep. Send packed sizes, shipment ID, FC, and whether labels are already on. We recommend LCL, FCL, air, or DDP and we will say if the file cannot meet the cutoff you want.

Contact details are below. Named places beat hypothetical kilos.

20. What we will not put in a public rate table

No USD per kilo that pretends Shenzhen to every US FC is one market. No promise that Amazon partnered carrier is always cheaper than a forwarder’s trucker.

Ask for a quotation. That is how live numbers are supposed to work.

21. Destination delivery paperwork the labels must match

BOL to the FC, appointment, pallet count, and shipment ID must match Seller Central. A creative trucker who writes housewares PO is not helping.

If Amazon reschedules, storage starts. Keep the forwarder in the same thread as Seller Central status.

22. Inspection at origin as cheap insurance

A two-hour carton audit in a China warehouse catches missing FNSKUs before export. It costs less than a US prep center. Use it when the factory is new to FBA.

Xinhan Logistics can say when an audit is justified. Not every repeat SKU needs a ceremony.

23. EU and UK labeling is not a reprint of the US PDF

Different FCs, different shipment IDs, sometimes different prep. CE marking and other product-law marks are not Amazon carton labels, but they still matter at import.

Do not reuse US FNSKU files on a European inbound. The scanner will not be polite about it.

24. Final freeze before the truck leaves the factory

Carton count, weights, photos, label placement, invoice, packing list, battery declaration. If one is missing, the truck is early, not efficient.

Efficiency is a complete file at cutoff, not a truck that arrives unlabeled at CY.

25. After receiving: reconcile Amazon versus origin files

When units are short, compare box content, packing photos, and factory carton marks. Do not start with accusing the ocean carrier if the origin file was already messy.

Keep the shipment ID folder for months. FBA reimbursement clocks are slower than WeChat memory.

26. How chargeable weight and CBM show up after labeling

Labels add almost nothing to kg, but they can change how you pack. Sellers sometimes add inner boxes after FNSKU work and then wonder why air chargeable weight jumped. Measure after prep, not before.

Volumetric air weight uses a divisor on L×W×H. Fluffy textiles that looked cheap on a sea CBM quote become expensive in the air product. If you might air a portion, design cartons that are not mostly air.

Sea LCL still cares about CBM at CFS. A last-minute extra inner carton that was not on the packing list also becomes a document problem. Freeze the pack after labels, then measure, then book.

27. Label placement photos that prevent destination arguments

One photo of a unit with FNSKU, one photo of a master carton with the Amazon carton label, one photo of a pallet if pallets are used. Date them. Keep them in the shipment ID folder.

When Amazon receiving is short, those photos are how you talk to the factory and to the forwarder. Without them, everyone points at the ocean.

Xinhan Logistics will ask for photos when the factory is new to FBA. It is not decoration. It is the cheapest inspection product on the file.

28. Appointment math after the main carriage looks finished

Cargo can be cleared and still wait for an FC window. That wait is still FBA transit. Build it into restock alerts. A seller who celebrates ATA and launches ads the same afternoon is using the wrong milestone.

If Amazon reschedules, storage and extra trucking appear. The forwarder can only manage this if Seller Central and the trucker share the same shipment ID and pallet count.

Give the operations person access, or at least daily screenshots of the inbound delivery status. Silence is how appointments slip while everyone assumes someone else clicked.

29. When to relabel in China after a bad first print

If the scan test fails in the warehouse, reprint before export. Do not negotiate with a barcode that already lost. Thermal print that is too light will not become darker at sea.

If Amazon regenerates carton labels because you changed quantity, the old PDF is hazardous waste. Pull it off the factory group and off the USB stick on the printer.

A same-day reprint in Guangzhou is cheaper than a California prep center. Budget a day for reprint risk on first POs. That day belongs in the transit stack next to labeling.
