A container from China does not have one price. It has an ocean string, a pile of surcharges, origin work, and a destination clock. Importers who ask ‘how much is a 40HQ’ without a port pair and a carton table are asking for a poster, not a rate.
This 2026 explanation covers FCL rate anatomy and surcharge names. Planning talk uses ranges. Xinhan Logistics will not invent a precise live freight rate and date-stamp it as today’s quote.
If you need a number you can book, send packed cargo facts. If you need a lecture on why two PDFs disagreed, keep reading.
1. Start with what ‘container cost’ includes
Some quotes are CY-CY ocean. Some add origin pickup and export. Some add destination delivery or DDP. Write the Incoterm and the named place before you subtract one PDF from another.
The cheapest container on a slide is often the one that omitted destination.
2. The ocean line is not the whole bill
Base ocean moves with lane, equipment, and season. Around it sit BAF-type fuel lines, peak or PSS in busy months, documentation, electronic filings, and terminal handling at both ends.
A forwarder who only recites the base ocean is teaching you to be surprised.
3. Planning table: FCL cost families
| Family | What it usually covers | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Pickup, export customs support, origin THC, docs | City, truck distance, extra stop, document quality |
| Ocean | CY-CY or as booked, equipment type | Lane, season, space, 20GP vs 40HQ |
| Surcharges | Fuel, peak, war-risk, documentation, filings | Carrier memo and calendar |
| Destination | THC, last free day, chassis, delivery, duty if DDP | Port, door type, broker, exam |
| Exception | Exam, storage, waiting, overweight | Whether you planned for them |
4. Give ranges the way a quotation should
Lane and season can swing a box from a relatively calm number to a painful one in the same calendar year. Short-sea Asia and long Pacific or Europe-plus-door products do not share a sticker.
Use last year’s invoice as a planning band, not as a promise. Then ask for this week’s validity.
5. How long the cargo sits also costs money
Transit bands for China FCL often land in a few weeks at CY and longer at door, depending on lane. Every extra day after last free day is rent.
A rate that looks brilliant and a box that sits is a bad rate.
6. Documents that change the invoice
Wrong VGM, late SI, and a packing list that does not match the invoice create amendment fees and rolls. Those fees are container costs.
Clean documents are a discount you control before anyone talks about BAF.
7. DDP versus port changes the meaning of ‘how much’
Port cost is ocean plus terminals plus your broker and trucker. DDP cost adds duty handling and a named place as agreed. Do not call them the same question.
If you want landed cost, say so. If you want CY, say CY.
8. LCL versus FCL on the same cargo line
Below a crossover, LCL per CBM plus CFS can beat a lonely 20GP. Above it, FCL usually wins on handling and unit cost. Run both once.
A container quote without the LCL alternative is only half an answer when you are near the line.
9. Packaging and payload limits
Overweight 20GPs and fluffy 40HQs produce different bills. Payload limits and road limits at destination are cost factors, not trivia.
Measure kg and CBM. The equipment decision is a cost decision.
10. Customs lines that sit next to freight
Duty, MPF-type fees where they apply, and exam handling are not ocean. They still answer ‘how much does this import cost’.
Xinhan Logistics will label duty as estimate when you ask for DDP and give a product story.
11. Common rating mistakes
- Treating a screenshot from a stranger as a valid FCL rate
- Forgetting origin trucking from an inland factory
- Assuming destination THC is ‘small’
- Comparing a 20GP to a 40HQ without cube math
- Calling a DDP door number an ocean rate
12. How to reduce the container bill without lying on the invoice
Fill the box, pick the smaller equipment if payload allows, book inside the validity, and stop changing the carton after the quote.
Under-invoicing is not a freight reduction method. It is how container files become enforcement files.
13. How Xinhan Logistics quotes a box
Same cargo facts, named inclusion list, surcharge names, validity, and whether the number is CY, DAP, or DDP. That is a quotation.
A round number in a chat with no validity is not.
14. Quote checklist so two vendors are comparable
- Equipment type and count
- Port pair or door ZIP
- Ready date and factory city
- Inclusion list in English
- Which surcharges are estimates
15. What this article will not publish
No ‘40HQ to Los Angeles is USD X this week’. No global average that pretends Jeddah and Felixstowe are one market.
Rates are lane-specific. Ask for a quotation.
16. Peak and emergency surcharges
PSS, peak season, and contingency lines appear when space or routing is ugly. A professional quote names them or states they may apply if the carrier memo lands after booking.
Silence is not inclusion.
17. Chassis, detention, and demurrage are rates too
In many destinations the metal box is cheap compared with the wheels and the yard clock. Budget them when you ask how much a container costs.
Importers who only budget ocean are volunteering for a second invoice.
18. Air is not a container, but it is the alternative cost
Sometimes the honest answer is that FCL cannot make the date and air chargeable weight is the real comparison. That is still a cost conversation.
Do not force a box onto a launch calendar that needed a flight.
19. Multiple containers are not a linear multiple
Two 40HQs can share one trucker appointment and one document set more efficiently than two lonely files. They can also create two last-free-day clocks.
Ask the desk to price the program, not only one box.
20. Currency, validity, and the day you accept
Ocean can be quoted in USD while origin is CNY and destination is local. Validity can be days, not weeks. Accepting on day eight of a seven-day validity is how prices ‘change overnight’.
Write the accept-by time in the same zone the carrier uses, or in Beijing time you both understand.
21. Worked thinking without fake USD
A Ningbo 40HQ CY Los Angeles in a calm week and a Yiwu pickup plus DDP Chicago in peak week are different products. Adding them in your head is how forums invent ‘the China container price’.
Split origin, ocean, dest. Then add. Then decide.
22. First-time importers and the ‘all-in’ temptation
All-in is useful when the inclusion list is written. All-in is dangerous when the cargo is unnamed. Prefer labeled lines the first time.
Xinhan Logistics would rather send an ugly itemized page than a pretty lie.
23. After you have one real invoice, build a model
Keep origin, ocean, dest, duty, and exceptions in columns. The next RFQ gets faster and the next surprise gets rarer.
A blog cannot replace that model. A quotation updates it.
24. When the factory’s ‘included freight’ is not a rate
Supplier EXW plus their cousin’s FCL is often an origin convenience, not a market rate. Ask for the inclusion list anyway.
You can still use them for stuffing and hire a dest desk—or hire one file owner.
25. Put surcharge literacy on the kickoff call
If your team cannot name BAF, THC, and last free day, the first container will teach them with invoices. Learn the names before the vessel.
That literacy is how you know whether a quote is complete.
26. Close: ask for this week’s box, not the internet’s average
How much a container from China costs is a quotation on packed cargo, equipment, lane, and Incoterm. FCL rates and surcharges are the vocabulary. They are not a single sticker.
Email the carton table and the door or CY. Xinhan Logistics will price the file or tell you which fact is still missing.
If two quotes differ by a wide gap, do not assume the low one is a gift. Assume a missing line. Find the line before you book.
The expensive container is often the one whose destination was invisible on page one.
27. Separate ‘rate’ from ‘surcharge’ from ‘someone’s waiting time’
Importers mash those three into ‘the container cost’ and then cannot tell finance what moved. A fuel-type line moved, or a peak memo landed, or the warehouse missed an appointment. Those are different conversations. Keep them in different columns even if the vendor sent one all-in.
Xinhan Logistics will still send an all-in when you ask, but the underlying columns should exist. If a vendor cannot reconstruct the columns, they cannot explain next month’s change. Unexplained change is how ‘how much does a container cost’ becomes a superstition.
28. Origin inland can dwarf a famous ocean difference
A factory in an inland city and a factory at the load-port fence do not share a pickup bill. People still compare their ocean lines and conclude one forwarder is dishonest. The dishonest part was the comparison. Put kilometers and extra stops on the RFQ.
If the cargo needs two pickups to fill one HQ, say so. Two pickups are a cost, not a surprise. FCL rates that assume one clean gate-in will look pretty and then grow a trucking appendix.
29. Destination fee literacy for people who only watch ocean
THC, documentation, last free day, chassis, and appointment waiting are ordinary. They are not a conspiracy that appears only on your shipment. First-time FCL buyers meet them as ‘hidden’. They were hidden because nobody wrote them.
Ask which dest lines are estimates. Estimates are honest. Silence is not a dest rate of zero. A container from China costs whatever you omitted plus whatever you wrote.
A number that was true on Tuesday can be folklore on Friday. That is not always greed. Space and equipment move. Accept inside the window or ask for a revalidation. Forwarding a Tuesday PDF on the following Monday as if it were law is how ‘the rate changed overnight’ emails are born.
Write the accept-by time. If you cannot decide, you are not shopping a rate. You are shopping a feeling. Feelings do not book containers.
Keep the last three FCL invoices split into origin, ocean plus named surcharges, dest, duty if any, and exceptions. After three files you will know your band better than any blog. This article will still refuse to publish a fake live USD sticker, because your three files are more true than our adjective.
Send those redacted files with the next RFQ if you want Xinhan Logistics to hunt a leak instead of a slogan. How much a container costs is a model you update. FCL rates and surcharges are the vocabulary. Use both.
Planning language in this article is a band, not a booking. Send packed dimensions, gross weight, origin city in China, and the destination port or door so Xinhan Logistics can replace the band with a quotation that has a validity window and a cutoff list.
If two vendors disagree by a wide gap, assume a missing inclusion line or a different Incoterm before you assume a gift. The file that names equipment, dest product, and last free day is the file that stays cheap after the vessel leaves. Ask for that file. Do not ask for a sticker.
