China to USA Door-to-Door vs Port Delivery: How Importers Should Choose

China to USA door-to-door and port delivery are different products with different invoices. Port delivery ends at CY or CFS. Door delivery ends at a named dock. DDP, when written clearly, adds a duty-handling rule to that dock.

This 2026 comparison is for importers choosing how far the China desk should walk with the cargo. Xinhan Logistics sells both when the facts fit. We will not compare a fake live CY rate to a fake live DDP rate and call it advice.

Choose the product that matches the team you actually have in the United States.

1. Write the named place before you shop a number

CY Long Beach, CFS New York, a commercial dock in Chicago, and a DDP ZIP are four places. A quote that only says ‘USA’ has not chosen a product.

Xinhan Logistics will refuse to pretend those four places share one price.

2. Planning table: port versus door versus DDP

Product Where responsibility ends Who still has work
Port / CY-CY Terminal Your broker, trucker, chassis plan
Port / CFS LCL Destination warehouse destuff Your pickup or on-forward
Door / DAP Named dock You still own duty unless quoted otherwise
DDP as written Named dock Duty handling follows the quote

3. Cost: the cheaper PDF is often the shorter PDF

Port looks cheaper because destination truck, chassis, brokerage, and duty arrive later. Door looks heavier because those jobs are visible. Add the missing cells before you award the cargo.

Importers who ‘save’ on CY and then pay storage are not saving. They are sequencing invoices.

4. Transit time: door adds clocks you must sell to your customer

Port ETA is not store ETA. Door bands add entry, appointment, and delivery. West Coast door FCL often lives in a multi-week band; East Coast and inland ZIPs run longer. Air door is faster and still not instant.

Do not promise a retailer a berth date.

5. Documents: both products need the same commercial truth

Invoice, packing list, and transport document do not get simpler because you bought port. ISF does not disappear because you bought door. DDP does not legalize a fantasy value.

Choose the product. Keep the honesty.

6. DDP is a wrapper on door, not a third geography

If you want duty handled in the same conversation as delivery, buy DDP in writing. If you want delivery but will pay duty yourself, buy door / DAP. If you have a broker, buy port.

Do not let a salesperson use the three words as synonyms.

7. LCL versus FCL changes the port you are buying

FCL port is usually CY. LCL port is usually a CFS with destuff. Door LCL and door FCL are different last-mile machines. Ask which one the quote assumes.

A CFS pickup is not a CY pickup. Write it down.

8. Packaging and receiver rules decide if door is even possible

A 40HQ to a downtown street without a dock is not a door product. It is a problem. Liftgate, appointment, and limited access belong in the RFQ.

Port is the honest choice when the receiver cannot take the box you booked.

9. Customs sits on both products

Port means you see the broker invoice. Door and DDP mean the desk should still tell you the status. CBP does not care which PDF you liked.

If the desk cannot explain ISF and release, do not buy door from them.

10. Common choice mistakes

  • Comparing CY-CY to DDP and calling CY more honest
  • Buying door to a ZIP that cannot accept a trailer
  • Buying port with no broker appointed
  • Promising a store a port ETA
  • Switching from port to DDP after the vessel sailed without a written change

11. How to choose in one paragraph

If you have a US broker and trucker, buy a clean port file. If you do not, buy door or written DDP. If the receiver is a platform inbound, buy the door product that has done that inbound.

That paragraph beats a week of slogan shopping.

12. How Xinhan Logistics quotes the two products

We ask for carton table, origin city, destination port or ZIP, ready date, product family, and who is Importer of Record if DDP is requested. Then we price the named place.

We will not send one number for ‘door or port, you decide later’.

13. Peak season punishes the product you are not staffed to run

Port in peak without a broker is how boxes sit. Door in peak without a frozen carton spec is how appointments slip. Book the product you can operate.

Peak is a staffing test disguised as a rate market.

14. Insurance should name the same place as the quote

A policy to CY is not a policy to a Chicago dock. Align the named place on freight and insurance.

Door cargo still needs stuffing photos.

15. After arrival, port and door fail in different buildings

Port fails at last free day and missing appointments. Door fails at a silent desk and a receiver who cannot unload. Both fail if CBP holds a messy invoice.

Write the failure mode you are buying and staff it.

16. E-commerce inbound is usually a door product

Platform warehouses do not want you to ‘figure it out at CY’. They want labels and a booked inbound. If that is your receiver, do not buy a CY education.

Say FBA or 3PL in the RFQ.

17. What this article will not publish

No live ‘door is $X more than port’. No guaranteed door day-count. No claim that port always saves money.

Ask for two quotes on the same carton table if you are genuinely choosing.

18. Surcharges hide on port more often than on door

Chassis, destuff, and pier pass style lines often appear after a CY booking. Door quotes that hide the same lines are just CY quotes in a warmer font.

Ask for names. Then choose.

19. Keep one owner if you buy door; keep two competent owners if you buy port

Door with three silent vendors is a relay race. Port with a competent origin desk and a competent broker can work if they share documents.

Xinhan Logistics can be the one owner on door or the origin owner on port.

20. Quote checklist for a fair comparison

  • Same carton table and ready date
  • Named CY / CFS versus named door ZIP
  • Duty included, estimated, or excluded on both
  • Last-free-day or appointment rules written
  • Validity dates printed

21. Score the first arrival against the product you bought

If you bought port, did the arrival notice and free days arrive in time? If you bought door, did the cargo reach the named place without mystery extras?

Five greens can earn the next file. Two reds should change the product or the desk.

22. Reduce cost by choosing the product you can operate

The cheapest honest choice is the one that does not generate storage, missed inbound, or a second truck. That might be port. That might be door.

Do not reduce cost by omitting the destination from the comparison.

23. Residential door is a different SKU from commercial door

Liftgate, inside delivery, and limited access are not footnotes. If the cargo is commercial, write dock hours and forklift reality.

A 40HQ residential fantasy is how door products get a bad name.

24. Air door versus sea door is still a mode choice

Do not let ‘door’ hide the fact that one quote is air and the other is sea. Write mode, then named place.

Door is not faster than the vehicle inside it.

25. Close with a real comparison RFQ

Send product name, packed dimensions, gross weight, origin city, and delivery city. Ask for port and door on the same facts if you are choosing. That is how China to USA door-to-door versus port delivery becomes a decision.

A reply that mixes the two places in one number is a no.

26. Do not switch products after stuffing without a written change

A box stuffed as CY cannot become DDP by a Friday chat if the importer plan and the quote do not exist. Change before cutoff or accept the product you booked.

Mid-voyage rebranding is how invoices and ISF data diverge.

27. Name last free day on port and the appointment on door

Those are the clocks that bill you after the ocean bragging stops. Put them in the kickoff.

Xinhan Logistics will write the clock next to the named place so the product you bought is the product you remember.

28. Staff the product you buy for the ugly week, not the brochure week

Port delivery is fine when your broker answers and your trucker has chassis. Door is fine when the desk warns you about the appointment. Buy the product that still works when someone is on holiday and the vessel rolled.

Xinhan Logistics will ask who covers the ugly week. If the answer is ‘we will see’, choose the product with fewer silent hand-offs.

29. Price the inland honestly after a West Coast discharge

A CY Los Angeles win can lose after a long inland truck to a Midwest DC. A door quote to that DC already contains the argument. Run both pictures before you call port cheaper.

The United States is large. The berth is not the customer.

30. Use port when you are building a US team; use door while you are not

Importers sometimes buy door forever out of habit after they already have a broker. Others buy port on the first shipment with no broker. Both habits are expensive. Revisit the choice when the team changes.

The product should follow the org chart, not last year’s email.

Write a change-order rule before anyone asks to convert CY into DDP after stuffing. If you cannot write the extra data and the extra lines, do not convert. Book the product you can finish.

West Coast port plus a long inland truck can lose to an East Coast door on the same carton table. Run both pictures. The United States is large. The berth is not the customer.

Xinhan Logistics will convert a product only in writing. Chat conversions are how ISF data and delivery orders disagree, and disagreement is how last free day becomes the real invoice.

Residential door is a different SKU from commercial door. Liftgate, inside delivery, and limited access are not footnotes. If the cargo is commercial, write dock hours and forklift reality before you call the ZIP a door. Staff the product for the ugly week, not the brochure week, and revisit port versus door when your US team actually changes.

Ask for port and door on the same carton table if you are genuinely choosing. A reply that mixes the two places in one number is a no. Xinhan Logistics will price the named place, not a USA slogan. Door is not faster than the vehicle inside it; write sea freight or air freight first, then the named place.
