How to Ship Small Quantities from China Overseas: A Complete LCL Guide

Small quantities from China still move on physics: chargeable CBM, cutoffs, and destination CFS. LCL exists because you should not buy a 20-foot for 2 CBM. Courier and air exist because you should not buy LCL for 0.2 CBM of urgent parts. The complete guide is knowing which small is which.

Xinhan Logistics handles LCL, FCL, air, and DDP door-to-door from the main China ports. This article is for trial orders, mixed SKUs, and replenishment that is not yet a container. Ranges are planning bands. Send packed dimensions and the delivery city for a real quotation.

1. Define small in CBM, not in emotion

A sample of 0.3 CBM, a trial of 2 CBM, and a program of 8 CBM are different products. Many LCL tariffs have a 1 CBM minimum. Courier has dimensional weight. Air has chargeable weight. Measure packed units. Then pick the machine.

2. When courier wins

Documents, genuine samples, and tiny high-value parts often belong on an integrator. Destination CFS plus LCL minimums plus a two-week wait can lose. If the customer date is next week, stop forcing ocean. Run a courier quote beside LCL before loyalty to sea.

3. When air freight wins

A few hundred kilograms of compact goods with a launch date often belongs on air. Door-to-door air from China often sits in a roughly 5-12 day planning conversation; express can be faster. Dimensional weight punishes fluffy cartons. Pack small and dense if you buy air.

4. When LCL is the rational small-ocean product

Trials above the courier break-even, mixed SKUs under a 20-foot, and replenishment that can live with destuff days. LCL door-to-door on long trades often plans in the mid-20s to 40-plus days. If that window fits, LCL is how small lots share a box without buying the whole box.

Small-quantity situation Usual product to price first Why
Under about 0.5 CBM, urgent Courier or air LCL minimums and destuff days dominate
About 1-8 CBM, flexible date LCL Shared container without buying unused FCL cube
Approaching low teens CBM LCL and 20-foot FCL both Destination LCL fees can flip the winner
Fragile or high isolation need FCL or air even if cube is small Neighbours and extra handling are the cost

5. Minimums and how to beat them without lying

Combine SKUs. Combine two POs. Wait a week if the customer can wait. Do not underdeclare CBM to dodge a minimum. Remeasure bills and customs quantity fights cost more than the minimum. Honesty is the cheaper small-quantity tactic.

6. Packing small lots for mixed destuff

Small lots get lost when unmarked. Palletise if the cube allows. Marks on two sides. Do not ship 40 inner cartons loose if they can be one pallet. Photos before CFS. Small cargo needs bigger marks, not smaller ones.

7. Documents for small commercial files

A commercial invoice with real values. A packing list that adds up. No sample / no commercial value theatre on a replenishment of sellable goods. Filings such as ISF or ENS still exist on small LCL. Small is not exempt from advance data.

8. DDP for small importers

If you do not have a broker, DDP LCL can be the operating system that makes a 2 CBM trial survivable. Read who is importer of record and whether tax cash is inside. If you already clear weekly, CFS collect may be cheaper. Match the desk you actually have.

9. Port or CFS collect for small lots

Collect can work if you have a trucker who has collected LCL at that CFS. A trucker who only pulls FCL will waste time. Write the receiving hours at your warehouse. Failed delivery on a small lot still creates a second handling fee that looks large against 1.5 CBM.

  • Packed CBM and kg, not guesses.
  • Delivery city, not only a country.
  • Factory Incoterm.
  • Whether batteries, liquids, or wood exist.
  • Customer date versus cutoff reality.

10. Cost: small lots feel destination-heavy

Per-bill documentation and destination CFS do not shrink as fast as cube. That is why the per-CBM number on 1.2 CBM looks angry. It is arithmetic. Combining lots or moving to FCL later is how the number calms down. Do not expect a 1 CBM file to look like a 25 CBM file.

11. Transit: small does not jump the queue

Your 1 CBM waits for the same stuffed master container. Cutoff is the date. Rolls still roll you. If you need queue-jumping, buy air. Selling a customer an LCL date as if it were a parcel date is how refunds start.

12. Customs on mixed SKU trials

Mixed SKUs need descriptions, not assorted. First-time HS codes deserve a broker look. Small quantity does not mean low attention from customs. It sometimes means more questions because the invoice looks like a catalogue.

13. E-commerce and FBA small inbound

Fulfillment portals have labelling and appointment rules LCL destuff does not include by default. State FBA or the portal on the quote request. A private warehouse door is a different last mile. Do not copy a friend’s FBA playbook onto a wholesale dock.

14. When to graduate to FCL

When packed cube is stably in the low teens, price the 20-foot every time. When you are filling 40-foot equipment, you are no longer in this article. Graduation is a weekly number, not a brand identity as the LCL company.

15. Damage risk on small mixed cargo

Small cartons crush. Palletise. Do not put glass in a shared box without a crate. Insurance still matters on trials because a trial that arrives broken is not a trial. It is a second PO.

16. Payment terms versus release

Factories who want original bills on a 1 CBM trial can park the cargo after arrival. Align payment and telex or express release. Small lots should not wait on a courier pouch of originals unless a bank requires it.

17. Common small-quantity mistakes

Using inner-box dimensions. Ignoring 1 CBM minimums. Booking LCL for a date that only air can hit. Undervaluing samples that are actually sellable goods. Shipping batteries quietly. Letting the factory pick a destuff CFS you cannot work. Comparing courier door with LCL ocean-only.

18. How Xinhan Logistics quotes small lots

Send the cargo card. We will price LCL collect, LCL door or DDP, and we will say if courier or air is less expensive once minimums and destuff are included. We will not pretend a chat CBM rate is a landed trial cost.

19. Calendar the factory as a small-lot partner

Small lots miss cutoff because they are only a few cartons and someone sends them tomorrow. Tomorrow is the next week. Put CFS cutoff on the PO even for 1 CBM. Discipline scales down. Chaos also scales down, into storage fees that look huge on a small invoice.

20. One SKU versus mixed cartons

One SKU is easier to destuff and to classify. Mixed cartons need more marks and more invoice lines. If you can split a messy trial into two clean LCL files, you might save destuff time. If you cannot, invest in the packing list.

21. Keep a trial cost sheet

Record all-in door or destuff-available cost against CBM after the first file. That number tells you whether the next order should combine, go FCL, or stay LCL. Memory of the ocean line will lie. The sheet will not.

22. Customer communication

Tell downstream customers a window. Tell them LCL is shared space. If they need a hard date, sell them air or hold stock. Small quantity is not a reason to promise FCL isolation or parcel speed.

23. What belongs in the first email

Product, packed dimensions, weight, origin city, delivery city, factory Incoterm, photos, and the date the cartons can enter a warehouse. That email is the complete LCL guide in practice. Everything else is commentary.

24. Small lots still deserve a named owner

Appoint a forwarder, a broker if you collect, and a person who watches destuff. Xinhan Logistics can own the international file when the scope says so. Small cargo disappears when nobody is named. Name someone, then ship.

25. Use LCL as a bridge, not as a personality

LCL is how small quantities share the ocean. It is not a forever identity. Measure cube every PO. Recheck FCL and air. The complete guide is the habit of measuring, not a loyalty to one acronym.

26. Samples that become sellable goods

If the trial will be sold, treat values and descriptions as commercial. Sample theatre that understates value creates a customs story that follows the next purchase order. Small quantity is not a classification holiday. Write the invoice as if a broker will read it, because a broker will. First impressions with customs are sticky. Do not spend them on a cute under-value.

27. How to combine factories without combining problems

Two factories into one LCL can beat two minimums. It can also mix documents and marks. Use one forwarder, one CFS, separate marks per factory, and a packing list that keeps the stories separable. Combining cargo is not combining invoices into mush. Mush is how one factory’s battery becomes everyone else’s exam.

28. Photography is cheaper than a missing small carton

A 1 CBM file with one missing carton can be a large percentage of the shipment. Photograph every pallet and every loose carton. Count at CFS. Small lots have no statistical cushion. Treat them with more photos, not fewer, because each carton is a larger share of the file. A missing carton on a 25 CBM FCL is painful. A missing carton on 1 CBM is the shipment.

29. When the next PO should not be LCL even if this one was

If the trial sold out and the reorder is 14 CBM, do not stay loyal to LCL out of habit. Price FCL. If the reorder is still 1 CBM but the date is brutal, price air. The complete small-quantity guide is a habit of re-pricing the machine. Xinhan Logistics will re-price when you send the new cube. Loyalty to an acronym is not logistics.

30. Cutoff on the purchase order even for one cubic metre

Small lots miss cutoff because they are only a few cartons and someone sends them tomorrow. Tomorrow is the next week. Put CFS cutoff on the PO even for 1 CBM. Discipline scales down. Chaos also scales down, into storage fees that look huge on a small invoice. A factory that treats small lots as optional errands will make LCL look slow when the warehouse was simply late. Customer windows, not Tuesdays, belong on shared containers. If the buyer needs a hard date, sell air or hold stock. Small quantity is not a reason to promise parcel speed. Xinhan Logistics will still quote LCL when the calendar fits, and we will still say when it does not. Keep a trial cost sheet: all-in door or destuff-available against chargeable CBM. That number tells you whether the next order should combine, go FCL, or stay LCL. Memory of the ocean line will lie. The sheet will not. Re-price the machine every PO. Loyalty to an acronym is not logistics.
