The best shipping method from China is the one that matches packed cargo, calendar, receiving door, and risk — not the one with the prettiest main-carriage number. Air, express, LCL, FCL, and DDP door-to-door are products. Your job is to pick a product that can finish.
This 2026 playbook walks importers through method choice: process, cost groups, transit stacks, documents, DDP versus port delivery, LCL versus FCL, packaging, customs, and common mistakes. Ranges are planning tools. Xinhan Logistics quotes a named origin city and a named delivery city. We do not publish fake live rates as if they were today’s booking.
Best is a scored decision. Write the scorecard before you collect quotes, or every house will win on the line they want you to stare at.
1. Build a scorecard before you shop methods
Weight four things: must-arrive date, landed cost ceiling, damage sensitivity, and whether you can act as importer of record. If the date is non-negotiable, air or a split starts with extra points. If the ceiling is hard and the warehouse can take a box, FCL starts with extra points. If you cannot file import, DDP starts with extra points. Do this on paper. Do not do it in a group chat during cutoff.
2. The method menu in plain language
- Express: small parcels, courier label, commercial invoices still required.
- Air freight: airport handling, AWB, chargeable weight.
- LCL: shared container, CBM, destuff at destination CFS.
- FCL: your seal, your box, CY or door.
- DDP: a method plus tax and a named door, not a separate physics.
DDP can ride air or sea. People who say “we ship DDP” without a mode have not chosen a method yet.
3. Planning table: which method fits which card
| Card | Method to try first | What must be true |
|---|---|---|
| Under ~50 kg samples | Express or air | No hidden DG; invoice value honest |
| 1–10 CBM, flexible date | LCL sea | Export cartons; destuff acceptable |
| Enough cube for a 20GP/40HQ | FCL sea | Door can receive or destuff is priced |
| Hard date, any size | Air or sea+air split | Chargeable weight understood |
| No broker at destination | DDP on the chosen mode | Licensed import and named place |
First try is not automatic win. Xinhan Logistics still runs the other column.
4. Process: how a method actually moves
Pickup at factory or CFS drop. China export filing. Main carriage. Destination arrival. Customs. Last mile or CY pickup. Every method uses this skeleton. The bones that change are cutoffs, screening versus VGM, AWB versus B/L, and destuff versus live unload. If a salesperson cannot walk this skeleton for your cargo, they cannot choose a method for you.
5. Cost factors you should score
Main carriage, origin inland, destination, duty, last mile, and the cost of being late. A method that wins on main carriage and loses on late is not best. Put a late penalty in the score even if it is a round number from sales, not from accounting. Silence on lateness is how bad methods survive.
6. How long each method usually takes
Express often 3–7 days door to door for routine small parcels when papers are clean. Air freight often 5–12 days door to door. LCL door to door often adds a week-ish versus FCL on the same string because of consol. FCL ocean water time varies by lane: many US West Coast bands about two to three weeks on water, longer to the US East Coast and much of Europe. These are planning bands, not promises. Peak and exams sit outside.
7. Documents the method cannot skip
Invoice, packing list, and a true shipper/consignee. Express still needs a commercial invoice for business cargo. Air needs AWB and screening data. Sea needs B/L instructions and, for FCL, VGM. DDP needs an importer story that is legally real. Method choice does not reduce the document floor. It changes the envelope the documents travel in.
8. DDP versus port is a method branch
Port delivery (CY or airport) is best when you have a broker, a trucker, and a door appointment machine. DDP is best when you want one owner to the warehouse. Mixing them in a “best method” bake-off without labeling the handoff is how importers buy a cheap CY and then discover they are the importer of record on a Friday night.
9. LCL versus FCL is the sea method split
Best sea method is not “sea.” It is LCL or FCL. Measure packed CBM. If you are near a 20GP fill, price the box. If you are a few CBM a week, price LCL and a consol programme. If suppliers are scattered, ask whether origin consol into FCL is cheaper than many LCL files. That is method design.
10. Packaging constraints by method
Express hates batteries in unmarked packs. Air hates leaking liquids and undeclared magnets. LCL hates weak cartons. FCL hates lazy stuffing. The best method for fragile goods might be FCL even when CBM is only “almost” a box, because crush risk on LCL is a method cost. State fragility on the scorecard.
11. Customs capability is part of best
A method that cannot file the destination is not best. Anti-dumping, FDA-style holds, wood packaging, and brand IP issues are method filters. If your goods need a licence, the fastest air product is still stuck. Screen the goods before you screen the rates.
12. How to choose a forwarder who can run the method
Pick a house that operates the method you scored, not a house that subcontracts it into the dark. Air needs airline allocation honesty. LCL needs CFS discipline. FCL needs equipment. DDP needs a real destination licence story. Ask who the destination agent is. Best method with an anonymous agent is a hope.
13. Common mistakes when choosing the method
- Letting the factory choose because they “always ship this way.”
- Choosing express for 200 kg because the courier pickup is easy.
- Choosing FCL to a shop that cannot receive a truck.
- Choosing air on bulky furniture without running volumetric kg.
- Choosing DDP from a seller who is not the importer of record they claim.
14. Reduce cost after the method is chosen
Best method first, then cost-down. Compress packaging for air. Consolidate purchase orders for FCL. Smooth weekly LCL instead of panic fortnightly air. Method hopping every week destroys programme rates and document quality. Reduce cost inside a method for 90 days before you reopen the scorecard.
15. What to send to get a method recommendation
Cargo card, photos of packed goods, receiving constraints (dock, tail-lift, residential), and the sellable date. Mention batteries and liquids first. Xinhan Logistics will recommend express, air, LCL, FCL, and whether DDP should wrap it. We will not recommend a method from a one-line destination country.
16. Origin cluster matters
Pearl River Delta cargo has a different air and sea menu than Ningbo-Zhoushan or Qingdao. Best method in Shenzhen is not automatically best in Yiwu. Name the city. Inland China may make rail-to-port plus sea beat a long air truck, or the opposite on a urgent spare.
17. E-commerce and wholesale are different methods
FBA-style inbound has label and appointment rules that can make a beautiful FCL useless if cartons are unlabeled. Wholesale to your own DC is a different best method. Do not copy a friend’s Amazon playbook onto a pallet programme.
18. Split methods as a designed best
Best is sometimes two methods. Fly A SKUs, sail B SKUs. Write which cartons are which. The factory must pack two lists. The forwarder must open two files. A designed split is professional. An accidental split is how serial numbers vanish.
19. Insurance and claims by method
Score the house’s claims behaviour on the method you will use. LCL claims look different from FCL seal claims and from air discrepancy claims. Best method includes a path to money if the cargo is hurt. Ask for a recent claims timeline, not a brochure sentence.
20. What this guide will not do
It will not crown one method for all China exports. It will not print a live rate. It will not tell you to ignore destination law. Best is local to the card you send.
21. A short scoring list
- Date risk: high / medium / low.
- Cube versus density.
- Door receiving: parcel / LTL / container.
- Import capability: self / DDP required.
- DG or licence flags: yes / no.
Five lines. Then request quotes only on the methods that survive.
22. Worked logic without fake prices
A retailer with a Tuesday ad and goods still on the factory floor on Thursday is in air or nothing. A distributor filling a DC for Q4 in August is in FCL. A spare-parts desk with 80 kg weekly is in a standing air or express rule plus an LCL overflow. Copy the logic, not someone else’s rate.
23. How quotes should look in 2026
Method name, groups, validity, named place, document list, and what is excluded. If three methods are proposed, three columns on one cargo card. Xinhan Logistics will say when a method is not offered because the cargo cannot legally use it.
24. Book one owner for the method
The best method still fails if pickup, export, and destination are three strangers. Contract a China freight forwarder who owns the skeleton. Then measure them on cutoff discipline and exception calls, not on a single cheap screenshot.
25. Request the method plan
Email the cargo card to Xinhan Logistics. Ask for the best method and the runner-up, with transit stacks and DDP versus port labeled. We will choose a product that can finish your door.
26. Choose, then stop re-trading unless the card changes
Best method is a lock for that PO. If the factory date slips, reopen. If CBM doubles, reopen. If a WeChat group found a cheaper ocean line with no destination, do not reopen. That is not a new method. That is an incomplete file.
Rail and other methods you should not pretend are air or sea.
China–Europe rail exists and is a different product: terminals, gauges, and a calendar that is not ocean and not air. This chooser is air, express, LCL, FCL, and DDP wrappers. If your cargo is on a rail conversation, do not paste rail transit into an ocean column. Best method is the method named. Unnamed ‘also rail maybe’ is how ETAs become fan fiction. Ask Xinhan Logistics for rail only when the destination and commodity actually fit; do not use rail as a rhetorical middle between air and sea when you have not priced it.
Importer of record capability is a method filter.
If you cannot act as importer, DDP is not a nice extra. It is the method constraint. A beautiful FCL CY product is not best if you cannot file import on a Friday. A beautiful airport product is not best if nobody can pay VAT. Score import capability before you fall in love with a main-carriage number. Best shipping method includes a legal person at destination. Cargo does not clear itself because the mode was fashionable.
Factory behaviour as a method constraint.
Some factories will only drop to a nearby CFS. Some will not stuff FCL. Some will not wait for VGM. Some love courier pickup because it feels like domestic China shipping. Best method must be operable at origin. Educate the factory or choose a method they can execute this month, then train them for the method you actually want next quarter. A method the factory will sabotage is not best. It is a dispute.
Brand, licensing, and inspection flags.
Counterfeit risk, licensed electronics, food-contact, and wood packaging change the method menu. Express is not a way to sneak commercial goods. Air is not a way to skip a licence. Sea is not a way to hide a brand problem in a container. Screen the goods. Then choose the method. Best is legal plus operable plus on time. Illegal-and-fast is not a 2026 option we will help you design.
How to retire a bad method without drama.
If you have been on weekly express for 400 kg, retire it with a written LCL or air-freight rule and a date. If you have been on LCL at 22 CBM, retire it with a 20GP trial. Method change needs a PO that is allowed to be the experiment. Changing method mid-cutoff on a live PO is how you pay two products. Best method includes a retirement plan for the old one.
