Door-to-door shipping from China to the USA costs whatever the cargo cube, weight, mode, season, HTS, and US ZIP require. There is no honest single number that covers a carton of jewelry and a container of furniture.
This 2026 article explains the cost stack and the planning ranges importers actually use in conversation. It does not publish a fake live door tariff. Xinhan Logistics quotes packed cargo and named cities.
If a website shows one USD from China to USA door for all goods, close the tab.
1. Start with chargeable cargo, not with a Google average
Sea cares about CBM and container type. Air cares about chargeable weight. Last mile cares about pieces, pallets, and access. Duty cares about HTS and value.
Send packed L×W×H, kg, and carton count before you ask ‘how much’.
2. The door-to-door stack in plain lines
Origin pickup and handling, export, main freight, US terminal or CFS, customs brokerage, duty and fees, last-mile delivery, plus extras for wait, liftgate, inside delivery, or exams.
Omitting any line does not make it free. It makes it a later invoice.
3. Planning table: what moves the money
| Driver | Low-complexity example | High-complexity example |
|---|---|---|
| Cube / weight | Dense cartons, few pieces | Fluffy furniture, mixed SKUs |
| Mode | FCL West Coast dock | Air DDP to residential ZIP |
| Customs | Simple HTS, known IOR | PGA flags, AD/CVD risk |
| Door | Warehouse with dock | No-dock, limited hours |
| Season | Soft space week | Peak + chassis shortage |
Use the table to frame a quote request, not to skip the quote.
4. LCL door cost behavior
LCL quotes often show a per-CBM ocean piece plus origin and destination handling, then a delivery. Minimum CBM charges punish tiny shipments.
Two CBM can cost more per cube than six CBM. That is math, not a scam, when minimums apply.
5. FCL door cost behavior
A 20-foot or 40-foot box has a freight rate plus pickup, origin THC, destination THC, drayage, and chassis. Delivery to a dock-capable warehouse is the clean version.
Live unload, drop-and-hook, and drop trailer are different last-mile prices. Name the warehouse rule.
6. Air door cost behavior
Chargeable weight is the greater of actual kilos and volumetric kilos. Fluffy packaging is an air tax you levy on yourself.
Air DDP still adds export, import, and delivery. Airport-to-airport is not door-to-door.
7. Duty is often the line people did not budget
Duty can be a small slice or larger than freight. It follows classification and entered value, not the ocean index.
A door-to-door quote that hides duty inside ‘all-in’ without HTS is not a cost. It is a bet.
8. DDP versus port-to-port on the invoice
Port-to-port plus your own broker and trucker can be cheaper if you already employ those people. Door DDP is often cheaper in management time if you do not.
Add staff hours to the port option before you call DDP expensive.
9. Transit time is a cost
Cash sitting on the water has a price. Stockouts have a price. A slower cheap door can lose to a faster dearer door.
State the latest acceptable delivery date with the quote request so the mode choice is honest.
10. Documents that change the quote
Batteries, liquids, wood, food-contact, and electronics with FCC stories change handling and entry. Missing those flags produces a cheap quote that cannot be executed.
The re-quote after origin receiving is more expensive than telling the truth first.
11. US last-mile add-ons
Liftgate, inside delivery, residential, limited access, appointment, and wait time are ordinary US trucking extras.
If your ‘door’ is a storefront on a Saturday, say so. Weekday dock assumptions will not survive contact with that ZIP.
12. Surcharges that are not a conspiracy
Bunker, peak season, war risk, and congestion charges appear and disappear. A quote should date them.
An undated door rate from last spring is a museum piece.
13. Common cost mistakes
- Comparing LCL DDP to FCL CY and calling one a rip-off
- Using website calculators that ignore HTS
- Forgetting origin inland from a non-port city
- Booking air on volumetric cargo ‘because it is urgent’ without measuring
- Accepting a door price with no inclusion list
14. How to reduce door-to-door cost
Pack denser. Consolidate. Choose FCL at the crossover. Keep HTS clean. Avoid peak if inventory allows. Give a dock if you have one.
Reduce exceptions. Every surprise at destination is a priced event.
15. Worked thinking without fake USD
A 1.2 CBM trial order to a residential address is usually an LCL or air DDP conversation with last-mile extras. A 58 CBM regular replenishment to a Midwest DC is an FCL routing conversation.
Those two cargoes should never share one ‘China to USA door price’ in your spreadsheet.
16. How Xinhan Logistics quotes door cost
We need product, packed specs, origin city, US door, Incoterm, and ready date. We return a stack and we label estimates as estimates.
Email the packed list. Do not email ‘1 CBM to USA how much’ with no city and no product.
17. Quote checklist
- Packed carton table and photos
- Commercial value for duty estimating
- Origin city and US ZIP / door type
- Need-by date
- Battery, liquid, wood, and PGA flags
18. What this article will not publish
No live LCL USD/CBM. No live 40HQ all-in. No live air per kilo dressed as today’s market.
Those numbers move. A quotation on your cargo is the instrument.
19. Currency, validity, and cargo readiness
Quotes expire. Space expires. Factory delays can miss the rate window.
A door cost is only real if the cargo is real on the date the space was booked.
20. Insurance as part of total cost
Premium is small next to a total loss. High-value door moves should include insurance in the decision, even if it is a separate line.
Do not confuse DDP with ‘someone else pays if the carton is crushed’.
21. Exams and storage: the unplanned invoice
Budget a mental reserve for exam and extra storage on first shipments and on messy SKUs.
Importers who run at zero reserve treat every extra as a betrayal. Professionals treat it as a tail risk.
22. Multi-SKU invoices and customs value
A door quote that used a round number value will move when the commercial invoice lists 40 SKUs with assists and tooling.
Give the real commercial story early if you want a DDP wrap that survives entry.
23. West Coast versus East Coast cost shape
Ocean and inland trade off. Tell us the door city and let the routing compete.
Forcing Long Beach because you like the name can tax a Boston door.
24. After you have a number: freeze the cargo
If cartons grow after the quote, the door cost grows. Factories adding ‘free extra packing’ that doubles CBM are not free.
Re-measure before pickup. Pay for a cube check at origin if the factory history is sloppy.
25. Minimums, broken CBM, and why tiny door shipments look expensive
LCL door-to-door from China to the USA often carries a minimum CBM at origin, a minimum at destination CFS, and a delivery minimum. A 0.4 CBM carton can be priced like a much larger cube because desks and trucks have floors. That is why a sample-looking commercial shipment can shock a buyer who scaled up from a 2-kilo courier.
If your trial order is truly tiny, ask whether air DDP or a consolidation holding for more CBM is kinder than a lonely LCL minimum. Holding has a calendar cost. Minimums have a money cost. Choose with eyes open. Do not call the minimum a hidden fee if it was on the quotation and you shipped below it.
26. How warehouses quietly rewrite a door price
A dock-high warehouse with a forklift, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. receiving, and a drop-trailer program is the cheap version of FCL door. A store, a self-storage unit, a site that requires a liftgate and inside delivery, or a 3PL that fines missed appointments is the expensive version. The ocean line did not change. The door did.
Send a photo of the receiving area if you are unsure. It is a better RFQ attachment than a motivational sentence about ‘best price’. Xinhan Logistics will map the last-mile product to that photo. We cannot map it to a city name alone, because city names do not include dock height.
27. Peak, GRIs, and the dated nature of a door number
General rate increases, peak season surcharges, and blank sailings make last month’s door number a historical document. A quotation should carry a date and a validity measured in days, not a vibe. If your factory will not be packed inside that validity, you do not have a cost. You have a hope that the market stands still.
Re-quote when the ready date slips by a week in a tight season. Importers who lock a spreadsheet in July and ship in October are not looking at the same door product. The honest move is to refresh the stack, not to accuse the forwarder of bait-and-switch on a lapsed quote.
28. Total landed cost versus freight theater
Door-to-door cost is a slice of landed cost. Duty, MPF, HMF, insurance, and the capital cost of days on the water sit beside it. A cheap slow door can lose to a dearer faster door if the SKU stocks out. A dearer DDP wrap can win if it avoids a $0-looking port option that later invoices storage.
Build one spreadsheet with all lines for this PO. Then ask Xinhan Logistics to fill the freight and estimated duty lines from packed facts. Do not keep two spreadsheets, one for ‘shipping’ and one for ‘surprises’. The second spreadsheet is how finance learns about logistics, late.
29. What to put in the quote email so the number can be real
Write product name and materials, packed L×W×H and kg per carton, carton count, photos, origin city, US ZIP and door type, commercial value and currency, ready date, IOR plan, and any battery, liquid, or wood-packing flag. That email is a door-to-door RFQ. ‘How much to ship from China to USA’ is a search query, not an RFQ.
If you omit value, a DDP wrap cannot include a serious duty estimate. If you omit the ZIP, last mile is fiction. If you omit packed size, CBM is fiction. Fiction quotes are cheap until they meet a warehouse. Email gzxinhang@126.com with the real list when you want a number that can be executed.
A door-to-door number that cannot be traced to packed cartons, a ZIP, and a duty method is not a cost. It is a wish. Keep the wish out of the PO until Xinhan Logistics can replace it with a stack on named places.
