China to USA Door-to-Door Shipping Guide: Sea Freight, Air Freight and DDP

China to USA door-to-door shipping is a mode choice plus an Incoterm choice. Sea freight, air freight, and DDP are not three parallel boxes. Sea or air is how the cargo moves. DDP is how jobs and money are assigned to a named US place.

This 2026 guide puts the three words in one file for importers who keep seeing them in the same sales sentence. Planning bands only. Xinhan Logistics quotes packed cargo; we will not paste a fake live mix of USD and days.

Pick physics first (cube, weight, calendar). Pick DDP or port second (ops team). Mixing those decisions is how quotes become incomparable.

1. Separate mode from Incoterm on the first slide

You can have FCL DAP, FCL DDP, air DAP, air DDP, LCL DDP. Write two columns. Vendors who smash them into one word are selling fog.

Fog quotes cannot be compared. Clear quotes can.

2. When sea door is the default

Dense or bulky cargo, calendar in weeks, replenishment not launch. Sea DDP door is the workhorse for wholesale cartons and containers.

It remains a weeks-scale product even when the vessel is famous.

3. When air door is the default

Compact, higher value, dated launch, or a slice of SKUs that earn the premium. Air DDP still needs a clean US entry.

Do not air-freight air. Measure chargeable weight first.

4. Planning table: mode plus DDP

Product Typical door band Cost shape Watch-outs
LCL sea DDP 25–45 days Per CBM + dest CFS + truck Minimums, extra handling
FCL sea DDP 22–48 days by coast Per box + drayage Chassis, warehouse gear
Air DDP 5–12 days Chargeable kg + delivery Volumetric tax, PGA
Express 3–7 days Per piece / kg Not a pallet program

5. Cost factors across all three

Cube or chargeable weight, origin city, US ZIP, season, HTS, and exceptions. DDP adds duty handling as agreed.

A sea number and an air number on different carton specs are not a comparison.

6. Transit is a stack

Origin, main leg, customs, last mile. Air shrinks the main leg. DDP does not shrink customs law.

Plan the stack. Bragging about a flight time is a hobby.

7. Documents do not care which mode you brag about

Invoice, packing list, HTS, IOR. Ocean adds ISF. Air adds airline recovery paperwork. PGA can apply to both.

Mode is not a document exemption.

8. DDP versus port on sea and air

Port sea is CY/CFS. Port air is airport. Door DDP is the ZIP. First-time importers usually want the ZIP product.

Experienced importers may buy port sea and DDP air for launches. That hybrid is legitimate if the desks are named.

9. LCL versus FCL inside sea DDP

Run the crossover on CBM and handling risk. Furniture and high-scratch goods often earn FCL earlier than dense tools.

Ask for both quotes once. Then stop re-litigating every week unless CBM changed.

10. Packaging for sea versus air doors

Sea wants stacking strength. Air wants density and airline-legal DG if any. Both want marks that match the packing list.

The same carton can be a good sea carton and a terrible air carton. Photograph and measure.

11. Customs is the same country

HTS and value follow the goods, not the airline. Air DDP still pays duty. Sea DDP still pays duty.

The only ‘saving’ in lying on an air invoice is the saving you will not keep.

12. Split mode as a tactic

Air a launch quantity DDP, sea the rest DDP or DAP. One PO, two files, two tracking strings, one inventory plan.

That is professional. That is not indecision.

13. Common mistakes mixing sea, air, and DDP

  • Comparing CY sea to DDP air and calling sea ‘too slow for the money’
  • Booking air because sea docs were late—then the air docs were the same docs
  • Using express parcel logic on 3 CBM
  • Forgetting West versus East Coast on sea door bands
  • Calling everything DDP when duty is collect on arrival

14. How to reduce cost across the mix

Pack for the mode you will actually buy. Do not pack for air and then sail. Do not pack fluffy and then air.

Freeze the factory carton to the quote. Cube creep is a mode killer.

15. How Xinhan Logistics recommends a mix

We look at CBM, kg, value, need-by date, door type, and product flags. Then we say sea DDP, air DDP, split, or port plus your broker.

Send those facts. A mode lecture without cartons is entertainment.

16. Quote checklist

  • Packed carton table and photos
  • Need-by date
  • Origin city and US ZIP / door type
  • Value for duty estimating
  • Whether DDP is required or port is acceptable

17. What this article will not publish

No live sea-air spread in USD. No guaranteed door dates. No fake ‘DDP 10 days sea’ poster.

Ask for a quotation on this week’s cargo.

18. Peak season changes the mix

When sea space is ugly, air DDP demand rises and air also gets ugly. Book earlier. Do not wait for a miracle string.

Peak is a calendar. Treat it like one.

19. Insurance on mixed modes

Insure each file. Air and sea have different claim patterns. Photos still win.

DDP is not a policy number.

20. After arrival differences

Sea doors fight chassis and CFS. Air doors fight recovery and cutoff hours. Know which fight you bought.

Your warehouse should know which fight is coming so labor is not standing around.

21. E-commerce versus wholesale doors

A 3PL appointment and a storefront alley want different last-mile products even if both are ‘USA DDP’.

Say the receiver type. Mode cannot fix a wrong door product.

22. When not to buy DDP

If you have a US broker, bond, and trucker, buy a clean origin plus ocean or air and keep destination. DDP is optional, not moral.

If you do not have those, DDP is how the cargo finishes.

23. Keep one owner when you split modes

Two modes with two silent vendors is how SKUs arrive without a packing relationship. One forwarder desk for both files is easier to audit.

Xinhan Logistics can run the split as two milestones in one conversation.

24. A practical order of decisions

Measure cartons. Set the latest door date. Choose sea, air, or split. Then choose DDP or port based on the team you have. Then book.

Reverse that order and you will rebook. Rebooking is how China-USA files get expensive and late at the same time.

25. Chargeable weight versus CBM: stop using one brain for both modes

Sea DDP thinks in cubic meters and container fits. Air DDP thinks in chargeable weight, the greater of actual kilos and volumetric kilos. A carton that is a bargain on LCL can be a disaster on air because it is a box of air. Measure L×W×H and kg before anyone says ‘just fly it’. The sentence ‘just fly it’ has emptied more margins than slow vessels have.

If the cargo is fluffy, redesign packing before you redesign the mode. If it is dense and heavy, air may be less stupid than it looks, but the need-by date still has to earn it. Xinhan Logistics will calculate both on the same carton table so you are not comparing a sea fantasy to an air wish.

26. One RFQ, two or three products, same cargo line

A professional China-USA door RFQ asks for LCL DDP, FCL DDP if CBM is near a crossover, and air DDP if the date is tight. Same packed specs, same ZIP, same ready date. Then you can choose. RFQs that ask only ‘best DDP price’ invite vendors to pick the product that makes them look cheap, which may not be the product that makes you on time.

Force the comparison onto one cargo line. Then pick physics (sea/air/split) and pick Incoterm (DDP/port) as two decisions. Mixing them in one emotional email is how you buy air DDP when you meant cheap sea, or cheap sea when you meant a dated door.

27. Launch calendar versus replenishment calendar

A launch has a date the sales team already printed. Replenishment has a date the warehouse can miss by a week without a press release. Air DDP and split mode belong to launches and stockouts. Sea DDP belongs to replenishment. Using launch panic on every PO trains the factory to be late and trains you to fly furniture.

Write which calendar the PO is on. Xinhan Logistics will not fly a replenishment that can sail, and we will not lecture a launch that cannot. The mix in this article only works if you tell us which clock is real.

28. Close the loop with POD and a mode retrospective

After the door, look at what you paid and what the calendar did. If sea DDP made the date with room, stop flying that SKU. If air DDP still arrived after a document delay, the mode was not the bottleneck—the PDF was. Retrospectives prevent the next PO from repeating a superstition about sea or air.

Keep the carton table. If CBM crept, that is why the sea quote ‘lied’. If chargeable weight exploded, that is why air ‘lied’. The mix did not lie. The cargo changed. Fix the factory carton, then pick sea, air, and DDP again with a straight face.

29. Put the mix on one page for finance and for the warehouse

Finance needs mode, Incoterm, estimated freight, estimated duty method, and validity. The warehouse needs ETA band, pallet versus carton, live unload versus drop, and appointment rules. If those two pages disagree, someone will be standing in a yard with the wrong labor. DDP does not unify those pages by magic. You unify them by writing both from the same booking.

When you split air and sea, write two warehouse rows. Launch SKUs and replenishment SKUs that arrive on different clocks are different inbound events. Xinhan Logistics can label the files so the dock is not guessing. Guessing at the dock is how door-to-door work looks messy after a clean ocean.

Sea, air, and DDP only behave when you give them one carton table and one door. Split the launch SKUs if the date is printed. Sail the replenishment if the warehouse can wait. Write both files so finance and the dock see the same mix. That is the whole guide, executed.

If you cannot measure the cartons this week, you cannot choose a mode this week. Measure first. The Pacific does not care that the sales deck already chose air.

Keep the inclusion list next to the mode choice. Air DDP and sea DDP are still DDP only if duty handling and the named place are written. A flight number is not an Incoterm. Write the named place.
