China DDP Shipping Explained: How Door-to-Door Delivery from China Works

DDP, Delivered Duty Paid, is the Incoterm that puts origin pickup, export filing, main carriage, import clearance, duties and taxes, and last-mile delivery on the seller’s nominated forwarder. For most 2026 importers buying from China, that nominated party is a China freight forwarder such as Xinhan Logistics, not the factory’s truck driver. The cargo still moves through the same ports and the same customs computers. What changes is who owns each invoice line when something stalls.

This article explains how China door-to-door DDP actually runs from a factory city to a warehouse dock. The time and cost bands below are planning ranges, not a live tariff. Send packed CBM, gross weight, commodity, origin city, and delivery city for a written quotation before you freeze a purchase order.

1. What DDP means in the China export lane

Under Incoterms, DDP means the seller delivers when the goods are placed at the buyer’s disposal, cleared for import, and ready for unloading at the named place. In China trade practice the named place is usually a commercial warehouse, an Amazon fulfilment node where the program allows it, or a bonded-to-door address the forwarder can legally serve. Port delivery is not DDP. A “tax included” WeChat message is not DDP.

The useful test is simple. If duty, import VAT or GST, customs brokerage, and the final truck are not inside the same written scope, you do not have DDP. You have freight plus a promise.

2. Who does the work when a China forwarder sells DDP

The factory still packs, invoices, and hands over cargo. The forwarder books space, files export, consolidates or loads a container, tracks the ocean or air movement, appoints a destination agent, pays or advances duty, and books the truck. Xinhan Logistics runs this chain from Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Qingdao, Xiamen, and inland cities that feed those ports.

The buyer still has jobs: a correct delivery address, a receiver who can unload, a tax ID or EORI where the destination requires it, and product facts that survive a customs question. DDP does not delete the importer of record in every country. It reallocates cash flow and operational control.

  • Seller or buyer must still name who is importer of record on the destination entry.
  • The forwarder needs a usable commercial invoice, packing list, and HS proposal, not a one-line WeChat photo.
  • Residential, inside-delivery, and appointment warehouses change the last mile even when duty is prepaid.

3. The door-to-door sequence from factory to dock

Cargo is booked against packed dimensions. Origin pickup or factory drop to CFS or CY happens next. China export customs is filed. The master movement sails or flies. Destination arrival triggers manifest, entry, duty payment, release, destuff if LCL, and on-carriage. Each handoff has a cutoff. Miss one and the DDP clock stretches even though the Incoterm did not change.

Write the sequence on one page with owners. Importers who treat DDP as a black box discover the box still has CFS cutoffs, ISF windows, and warehouse receiving hours.

4. LCL DDP is not the same product as FCL DDP

Less-than-container DDP shares a master box with other shippers. Origin CFS, destination destuff, and extra labels sit on the critical path. Full-container DDP skips destuff of mixed cargo but adds container free time, chassis, and demurrage risk if the warehouse cannot receive.

A 2 CBM trial order and a 65 CBM replenishment should not share a template quote. Ask Xinhan Logistics to price both modes when you are near the 12–15 CBM band, where FCL often starts to win on money and handling.

5. Air DDP sits on chargeable weight, not ocean CBM

Air DDP is the right tool when a store opening, a production stoppage, or a high-value compact SKU cannot wait for a sailing. Chargeable weight is the greater of actual kilograms and volumetric kilograms. Door-to-door air still includes export, arrival handling, clearance, and a van or small truck.

Do not compare an air DDP number to an ocean port-to-port number. Compare landed calendar and landed cash for the same named place.

6. Planning transit bands for 2026 door-to-door DDP

Lane example Sea DDP planning band Air DDP planning band
China factory to US West Coast warehouse 25–40 days 6–12 days
China factory to US East Coast warehouse 32–50 days 7–13 days
China factory to UK or North Europe warehouse 30–48 days 6–12 days
China factory to Australia warehouse 18–32 days 6–11 days
China factory to UAE warehouse 20–35 days 5–11 days

These bands assume documents are clean, the commodity is ordinary general cargo, and destination customs does not exam the lot. Peak sailings, typhoon weeks, and exam holds sit outside the band. Ask for a schedule against a real sailing or flight, not a brochure average.

7. Customs is a process, not a surprise fee at the door

Import entry needs a classification, a customs value, an origin story, and any licences. DDP means the forwarder’s destination agent usually files and funds duty, then recovers it inside the DDP invoice or a separate duty disbursement. The physics of the tariff schedule do not change because someone prepaid.

Wrong HS codes under DDP still create exams, reclassifications, and delayed trucks. Cheap DDP that files a decorative invoice is not cheaper. It is delayed cargo with a later bill.

8. Duty, VAT, GST, and who funds them

Duty follows the tariff. VAT or GST follows the destination tax system and often dwarfs duty on consumer goods. Under DDP the quote should say whether tax is estimated, guaranteed, or billed at outturn. A “DDP-ish” quote that leaves VAT to the receiver is DDU wearing a DDP sticker.

Xinhan Logistics will ask for the product name, material, use, and a draft invoice before locking a tax estimate. That is not bureaucracy. That is how you avoid a warehouse that will not receive until a second payment clears.

9. Documents that make DDP runnable

You still need a commercial invoice, packing list, and transport document. Many lanes also need an ISF for the United States, ENS or ICS2 data for Europe, a certificate of origin for preference claims, and product certificates for batteries, food-contact, or cosmetics. DDP does not waive those filings. It assigns who prepares them.

  • Invoice value, Incoterm on the invoice, and currency must match the booking.
  • Packing list CBM must match the warehouse measure, not the inner-box estimate.
  • Consignee and notify on the bill must match who can legally receive.

10. Packaging is part of the DDP promise

Door delivery assumes the cargo can be handled. Cartons that collapse in a CFS aisle become a claim before the truck is booked. Palletise when the destination warehouse wants pallets. Mark SKU and carton count on two sides. Moisture bags and corner boards are cheap compared with a rejected appointment.

Furniture, stone, and liquid-adjacent cargo need export packing, not ecommerce mailer boxes. DDP does not magically strengthen fibreboard.

11. Port delivery versus true door delivery

Port-to-port or CY-CY leaves you with destination THC, D/O, and your own trucker. Delivered-at-place without duty is still not DDP. Door DDP includes the appointment, the live load or drop, and the conversation with the warehouse about tail-lift, residential streets, and limited access.

If the quote stops at “destination port,” do not tell your warehouse a date. You do not have one.

12. Residential and fulfilment-centre quirks

A private driveway, a third-floor walk-up, or a fulfilment centre with a strict ASN window is not a standard commercial dock. DDP quotes that assume a forklift and a 08:00–16:00 receiving desk will fail on those addresses. Say so at booking.

Some marketplaces restrict who may deliver. Confirm the program rules before you sell DDP into a node that only accepts named carriers.

13. Batteries, liquids, and other cargo that is not “normal DDP”

Lithium batteries, aerosols, magnets in some air products, and many chemicals need extra documents, labels, and sometimes a different consolidator. A DDP product card copied from garments will not carry UN-numbered cargo. Tell the forwarder the proper shipping name before the factory tapes the cartons.

If the factory says “it is only a small battery,” still declare it. Hidden DG is how DDP shipments get rolled, fined, or abandoned.

14. How a usable DDP quote is built

A usable quote names origin service (pickup or ex-works drop), mode, whether LCL or FCL, destination city, tax treatment, and validity. It separates freight from duty when duty cannot be guaranteed, or it states a duty estimate with an outturn clause. It does not hide destination CFS inside “local charges as per outlay.”

Ask Xinhan Logistics to show the stack. Compare stacks, not single headlines.

15. Common mistakes that break China DDP

Importers under-declare value to “save tax,” then wonder why clearance stops. They book DDP on a sample invoice and ship a different assortment. They give a PO box. They ignore receiving calendars around destination holidays. They treat the first cheap offer in a group chat as a contract.

  • Do not ship before the HS story and invoice match the physical cargo.
  • Do not mix DDP and DDU on the same master bill without saying so.
  • Do not assume free time at destination because the origin quote was cheap.

16. How DDP interacts with your purchase Incoterm with the factory

You can buy EXW or FOB from the factory and still sell DDP to your own customer, or you can ask the factory for DDP. Those are different contracts. If you buy FOB Ningbo and hire Xinhan Logistics for DDP to Chicago, you own the China-side commercial relationship and the forwarder owns the logistics chain from the agreed handoff.

Do not let the factory’s FOB booking and your DDP booking fight for the same cargo. One party books. One party files export. Write it down.

17. Insurance still belongs in the conversation

DDP allocates delivery risk later in the journey than FOB, but cargo still drowns, crushes, and goes missing. Institute cargo insurance is a separate product. Door-to-door without cover is a large deductible named “optimism.”

State the insured value as invoice plus freight plus a buffer, not factory cost alone, if you want a claim that resembles the landed loss.

18. Tracking and exception handling

A DDP shipment needs exception owners at origin CFS, on the water or in the air, at customs, and on the truck. Weekly “any update?” messages are not a control tower. Ask who you call when an exam starts, when a chassis is missing, or when the warehouse rejects a pallet count.

Xinhan Logistics would rather receive a messy packing list on day one than a panic email after the vessel berthed.

19. When DDP is the wrong product

If you have your own broker, a bonded warehouse, or a duty regime that depends on your importer number, port delivery or DAP plus your broker can be cleaner. If the cargo is a one-off personal effect with no commercial invoice discipline, DDP still needs a legal entry path. If the destination forbids third-party importer models for that HS code, a DDP slogan will not create one.

Choose DDP when you want one operations owner and a predictable cash shape. Choose it after the legal path is confirmed, not before.

20. How to brief Xinhan Logistics for a DDP plan

Send product photos if the HS is unclear, packed length-width-height, carton count, gross kilograms, factory city, ready date, and the warehouse receiving rules. Name any batteries, liquids, wood packaging, or brand licensing issues. Name the delivery city, not only the country.

You will get a mode recommendation, a planning window, and a quotation with scope. That is how door-to-door from China is supposed to start.

21. DDP does not freeze rates for a season

Ocean and air markets move. GRI, PSS, war-risk, and space rationing still apply under DDP because the forwarder buys those products on your behalf. A quote should carry a validity date. Booking after expiry is a new quote, not a moral argument.

Plan inventory with a band, then lock a sailing. Do not plan a retail calendar on an expired PDF.

22. Free time, storage, and demurrage still exist under DDP

Prepaid duty does not make a container weightless at the terminal. If the warehouse cannot receive, the box waits, and waiting is billed. LCL cargo that sits after destuff collects storage. DDP quotes should say who pays when the delay is the receiver’s closed dock versus a customs exam.

Give receiving calendars at booking. A “deliver whenever” warehouse is a storage invoice in slow motion.

23. How to read arrival notices without panicking

Arrival notices list charges, last free dates, and document holds. Under DDP many of those lines should already be in scope. If a destination agent bills you directly while you bought DDP from China, stop and reconcile scope before you pay twice.

Forward the notice to the party who sold you DDP. Do not ignore it because you “already paid everything.” Last free dates do not care.

24. A short DDP readiness checklist

Confirm Incoterm on the commercial invoice. Confirm packed CBM. Confirm HS and any licences. Confirm importer-of-record model. Confirm warehouse receiving. Confirm insurance. Confirm whether tax is estimated or outturn. Then book.

Skip any line and DDP becomes a slogan again. Keep every line and door-to-door from China is an ordinary industrial process.
